Step and Repeat vs Media Wall vs Photo Backdrop, What Is the Difference?
These three terms get used interchangeably, but they are not always exactly the same thing. Here is how each one is typically defined in the events industry, and why the differences matter when you are ordering one.

The definitions
Three Terms. One Clear Breakdown.
All three terms refer to a branded backdrop used at events. The differences are subtle but they matter when briefing a vendor or searching for the right product.
A step and repeat specifically refers to a backdrop with a repeating logo pattern, designed for a photo line where guests step in, pose, and step out. The term emphasizes the process as much as the backdrop itself, it is most associated with red carpet and media check-in moments.
The repeating pattern is designed so that no matter where a photo is cropped, at least one complete logo appears somewhere in the frame. This is why brands rely on them for media coverage and social sharing, every photo becomes branded content without any effort from the photographer.
Best used for:
Red carpets, movie premieres, galas, award shows, trade show photo ops, any event with a dedicated photo line.
"Media wall" is often used as a broader, more formal term for the same type of backdrop, particularly in press and broadcast contexts. It emphasizes the backdrop's role as a branded surface for media coverage rather than the step-in/step-out photo ritual.
Media walls may feature fewer, larger logo repetitions optimized for wide camera shots and broadcast framing rather than the tight, frequent repetition of a step and repeat. A media wall behind a press conference podium needs to be visible in both close-up speaker shots and wide room shots, which often means spacing logos differently than you would for a photo line.
Best used for:
Press conferences, media briefings, broadcast interviews, sponsor recognition walls at large events.
"Photo backdrop" is the most general term, covering any branded or decorative background used for photography, including step and repeats, media walls, and backdrops that do not feature repeating logos at all.
Solid-color backdrops for corporate headshots, scenic backdrops for social content, and graduation photo backgrounds are all photo backdrops, but they are not step and repeats or media walls. The term describes the function (a background for photos) rather than the format.
Best used for:
Corporate headshots, social content, graduation photos, any photography where branding is secondary to the image itself.

Which Format Is Right for Your Event?
In practice, the differences matter less than getting the design and sizing right for your specific event. Here is a quick guide based on what you are trying to accomplish.
If guests will be lining up in front of the backdrop for individual or group photos, a step and repeat with tight logo repetition is the standard choice. You want every cropped photo to capture your brand regardless of where the subject stands.
For press conferences and broadcast interviews, a media wall with slightly larger, less frequent logo placement often reads better on camera. Wide broadcast shots benefit from more breathing room between logos than a photo-line setup.
For event photography or social content where branding is secondary, a simpler photo backdrop may be all you need. Solid brand colors, a clean logo, or a lifestyle-style background can work better than a repeating logo grid for this use case.
